When AI Expands Expertise and When It Doesn’t
Some of our most read articles continue to be those that examine human and AI domain expertise. Discussions about AI and domain expertise frequently seem to end up at the question: can machines replace experts? This is an understandable concern, but we think that the more pressing question is this: is AI actually expanding what is defined as expertise or is it merely accelerating existing assumptions at an industrial scale?
AI does not automatically deepen understanding. Under the right circumstances, it can broaden understanding in meaningful ways. Under the wrong ones, it can harden intrinsic bias and present it with greater confidence conveying a false legitimacy. In other words, AI can turn biased institutional assumptions into instantly accessible pseudo-expertise.
This distinction matters because organizations are increasingly treating AI output as a proxy for expertise, sometimes without fully understanding how that expertise is being formed.
Consider simulations in which people use tools to explore scenarios that have not yet occurred. Engineers use finite element analysis to test structures under stress. Pilots train in flight simulators that expose them to failures they may not have nor ever will encounter in real life. These methods work because they are anchored in well understood physical models and are validated against reality over time.
AI will extend simulations into areas where governing models are incomplete or poorly defined. In supply chains, hiring systems or policy planning, events and rules are shaped by human behavior instead of physics. Here AI can scan large volumes of historical data and explore myriad variations faster than a human team could manage. This speed and breadth can bring to the surface patterns that would otherwise remain submerged in a sea of data. At the same time, without sufficient guidelines and understanding of both the data and their means of collection the resulting analysis is only as good as the quality of data used to train the system.

And this is where the limits of AI are made clear. Models trained on institutional data will inherit the assumptions embedded in that data. If past decisions are shaped by intrinsic bias, incomplete measurement or self-justification, the model will reflect those traits as well. In those cases, AI is unable to challenge dogma because it is unaware of it. Unfortunately, it will repeat it efficiently and at scale.
AI output carries a tone of neutrality that can mask the values and choices baked into its training material. A recommendation may sound objective while unintentionally reinforcing historical patterns. Without careful oversight, what appears to be expanded expertise may simply be consensus rendered faster.
This is why human judgment, a human in the loop, remains central. People bring something that models do not. They can recognize when the data itself is distorted. They understand which outcomes matter but were never measured. They can question whether a pattern reflects reality or coincidence. In practice, the most productive systems pair AI’s capacity to process large datasets with human insight into context, consequence and meaning.
There are domains where this partnership clearly broadens expertise. Continuous monitoring is one example. AI systems can monitor endless streams of information without fatigue, flagging anomalies across large environments such as network security or industrial operations. Humans then interpret those signals, deciding which ones have real value and which are noise. While it’s still possible to introduce some bias within this method, this system does make use of the strengths of both.
Cross domain pattern recognition offers another case. AI can compare data from unrelated fields and uncover connections that would not appear in a single discipline. A human expert is still needed to judge whether those connections make sense and whether acting on them would be wise. Again, the value emerges in this scenario from the interaction of human and AI, not from either participant acting independently.

Viewed this way, expertise becomes less about who holds the answers and more about how insight is produced and applied. AI expands expertise when it is tied more closely to real world signals than to institutional narratives. It can work against expertise when it amplifies assumptions without challenge. AI should not be treated as an expert in its own right, nor as a simple tool. It seems to function best as a partner that exposes patterns at scale while remaining subject to human scrutiny.
The scenarios evolve and AI’s sophistication continues to grow. Perhaps the future of expertise will depend less on choosing between human or machine and more on designing systems where each checks the other.
